Have your teeth become dull over the years? Have teeth stains or discoloration caused your smile to lose its youthful shine? With professional teeth-whitening, we can revitalize your brilliant smile by eliminating teeth stains and brightening your dentition. Best of all, you can apply the treatment yourself from the comfort of your home, or we can do it for you in a single visit to our office!
HOW IS TEETH-WHITENING APPLIED?
Teeth-whitening at home: In most cases, Dr. Gorman and Dr. Yassa will recommend a take-home teeth-whitening kit containing a custom-designed set of trays and a supply of our professional strength bleaching gel. You can apply the gel evenly to your teeth for a couple of hours each day using the custom-fit trays.
Teeth-whitening in our office: Sometimes, you may need a brighter smile in a hurry. If you have an upcoming wedding, party, or business presentation and want your smile to look its best, may suggest an in-office treatment. Your dentist will apply the gel to your teeth, then stimulate it with a specially-calibrated light until your stains are erased.
WHY DID MY TEETH STAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Teeth stains are common, and can affect nearly everyone at some point in their lives. Usually, teeth stains on the outer layer – the semi-translucent shield of minerals known as enamel – are caused by plaque, tartar, food, beverages, tobacco use, and more. Darker foods and beverages, like tea, wine, soft drinks, acidic fruit juices, sauces, and berries are more likely to stain teeth faster than substances with lighter pigments.
In some cases, however, teeth can become discolored from within – known as intrinsic discoloration – and teeth-whitening may not be the right solution. Internal discoloration may indicate damage or infection inside the tooth, or can result from the use of certain medications and antibiotics.
HOW DOES THE BLEACHING AGENT WORK?
The professional strength bleaching agent we use is peroxide-based, and diligently breaks up stains on the top layers of your tooth enamel over time. It is designed to work slowly so as not to damage the enamel even when stimulated with light during an in-office procedure.
WILL THE WHITENING GEL MAKE MY TEETH SENSITIVE?
Professional whitening gel is powerful, but still safe to the health and integrity of your tooth enamel. There may be some sensitivity immediately following each application, but it will be minor and should subside quickly. We can also recommend enamel-strengthening toothpaste to reduce the potential for tooth sensitivity.
WHAT MAKES PROFESSIONAL WHITENING DIFFERENT FROM OVER-THE-COUNTER PRODUCTS?
Besides the strength of the product (over-the-counter products are significantly diluted), professional treatment also offers the benefits of a professional examination and application. The examination helps ensure that teeth-whitening is the right option to brighten your smile, and the help of your dentist ensures that you don’t misuse the product and cause damage to your healthy tooth enamel.
HOW LONG WILL THE TEETH-WHITENING RESULTS LAST?
While teeth stains and discoloration may not always be preventable, you will have a higher chance of keeping your smile bright and stain-free by keeping your teeth clean and healthy. The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily to keep food particles and dental plaque from clinging to your teeth. You can also receive more gel from us in the future to touch-up your smile as needed using your custom whitening kit.
