Do you currently wear dentures, but wish they could stay sturdy for longer? Have you recently lost one or more teeth, and are wondering what’s the best option for replacing them? Dental implants are often the most comprehensive solution to rebuilding smiles, whether you’ve lost one, several, or all of your teeth. We utilize advanced technology to plan, place, and restore dental implants so you can once again enjoy the benefits of a beautiful, strong, healthy smile.
WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?
Dental implants consist of three parts:
- An implant post, which is usually made from biocompatible titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone.
- An abutment, which connects the implant post underneath your gums to the implant-supported restoration.
- A restoration, which can be a dental crown, bridge, partial denture, or complete denture, depending on how many teeth you’ve lost.
HOW ARE IMPLANTS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BRIDGES AND DENTURES?
The implant post is what makes dental implant restorations different from their counterparts. Traditionally, bridges and dentures are supported by the dental ridge. In the case of dental bridges, supportive crowns are bonded to neighboring teeth for additional stability, and partial dentures may also rely on small, hidden clasps for strength.
By contrast, implant restorations are supported by posts implanted into your jawbone, which in turn support your dental crown, bridge, or denture with the strength and stability of your natural roots.
ARE THERE BENEFITS TO CHOOSING DENTAL IMPLANTS?
After an implant post is placed, the jawbone gradually fuses to the post (a process known as osseointegration), creating a biocompatible replacement for your roots. The benefits of replacing your lost roots with dental implants include:
- Increased stability for your replacement teeth
- Restored stimulation to the jawbone, which reduces jawbone degradation due to tooth loss
- Lifelike dentition
- Improved dental health (replacement teeth reduce spaces for oral bacteria to hide)
- No need to modify your remaining healthy teeth to support your replacement teeth
WHAT IF I ALREADY WEAR DENTURES?
Even if you’ve worn a dental bridge or dentures for a while now, you can still benefit from the addition of dental implants. However, after a while, the prolonged loss of your roots can cause your jawbone to grow weak. Before recommending implant placement, your dentist will take digital X-rays and images of your teeth and jawbone. If your jawbone has lost density, you may require a bone graft to strengthen it.
IS DENTAL IMPLANT PLACEMENT DIFFICULT?
Dental implant placement is a straightforward procedure but requires extensive planning to execute properly. An examination, digital X-rays, and measurements help create a comprehensive surgical guide that will ensure your implant posts are precisely placed. Each implant must be able to withstand a maximum amount of bite pressure to adequately support your replacement teeth.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF I’M A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?
During your consultation, Dr. Gorman or Dr. Yassa will perform a thorough examination employing digital imaging technology (like digital X-rays and intraoral cameras) to inspect your oral health. While most tooth loss patients are viable candidates for dental implants, it is important that your gums be free of gum disease and that your jawbone be strong enough to support the implant posts.
