Do you wish you could simply replace the visible portion of one of your teeth? Has structural damage or a large filling caused your tooth to become weak? At Gorman Dental Care, we custom-create the top part of the tooth all the way to the gum line (known as the tooth’s crown) to closely replicate your original tooth structure. Then, by securing the restoration over the tooth and bonding it into place, we can shield the weakened or damaged tooth from your bite pressure. Because it completely caps the tooth, a dental crown can improve its appearance, as well as restore the tooth if it has been cracked, fractured, or broken.
WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN MADE OF?
To more effectively customize your dental treatment, we offer dental crowns in a variety of materials, each with unique benefits according to your specific needs. For instance, your dental crown may be crafted from metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) if it restores a molar that is subjected to higher levels of bite pressure. More visible crowns are often made from porcelain or zirconia which offer highly realistic results, right down to the light-reflecting properties of natural tooth enamel.
WHAT IS A PARTIAL CROWN?
If your tooth is damaged but doesn’t need a full dental crown, Dr. Gorman or Dr. Yassa might suggest a porcelain or zirconia inlay or onlay, also known as a partial crown. An inlay is placed between the cusps of the tooth on the chewing surface. An onlay is also placed between the cusps, but also extends over at least one cusp and down the side of the tooth. Partial crowns are excellent choices for restoring mild to moderate tooth damage while preserving a maximum amount of your healthy tooth structure.
WHAT IS A CEREC SAME-DAY CROWN?
Using advanced CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology, we can make your restorative treatment quicker and more convenient by designing and crafting your dental crown in our office. CEREC eliminates the need for a temporary while waiting weeks for a laboratory to craft your crown. With CEREC we can design, fabricate, and place your permanent dental crown the same day.
HOW DO I KNOW IF A DENTAL CROWN IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Dental crowns are made to restore the entire top portion of a tooth, and can, therefore address a wide variety of cosmetic and restorative concerns. Crowns are most often recommended for teeth that exhibit one or more of the following:
- Moderate to severe cracks and fractures
- Missing pieces
- Severe blemishes, such as internal discoloration
- A large tooth filling, which could weaken the structure
- Recent root canal therapy
- Tooth loss (when coupled with a dental implant, a dental crown can replace a lost tooth without the need for a dental bridge)
