Do you have one or two minor tooth blemishes but don’t want to undergo a complicated procedure to fix them? When it comes to smile improvement, a little goes a long way, and with dental bonding/contouring, Dr. Gorman, and Dr. Yassa can skillfully reshape and improve teeth with little to no tooth alterations. Depending on your specific needs, bonding/contouring may be a less invasive and permanent solution to smile improvement than porcelain veneers or porcelain dental crowns.
WHAT IS BONDING MATERIAL MADE FROM?
Dental bonding is a highly-esthetic material made from finely-ground acrylic and quartz-like particles that are mixed into a liquid resin. The composite resin is then applied to the surface/s of the tooth/teeth, sculpted/blended to the contour of your smile, hardened with a special curing light, and polished to a lifelike shine.
WHAT CAN CONTOURING DO FOR MY TEETH?
Contouring is the opposite of bonding. Instead of adding to the structure of the tooth/teeth, contouring lightly sculpts away small areas of tooth enamel. It can help reshape teeth that have odd, angular edges, appear too large, or slightly overlap other teeth. The light sculpting can also help smooth rough patches of tooth enamel, and perfect the overall contour of your smile.
WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER BONDING/CONTOURING?
Bonding and contouring are recommended for many different cosmetic concerns and are often preferable when you wish to preserve a maximum amount of your healthy tooth structure. We might suggest one or both procedures to improve:
- Stubborn teeth stains/discoloration
- Chipped and/or jagged tooth edges
- Excessive spaces between teeth
- Teeth that are too small or too large
- Slight cracks in your tooth enamel
- Mildly crooked or overlapping teeth
- Excessive tooth wear, especially if it has changed the shape of your tooth
WILL CONTOURING HURT MY TEETH?
Dental contouring is a minor procedure and doesn’t always require local anesthesia. Because it involves sculpting your tooth enamel, you may choose local anesthesia to minimize the potential for discomfort. You may experience slight sensitivity after the contouring procedure, but it should subside within a day or two.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BONDING/CONTOURING?
By limiting the amount of alterations done to your teeth, bonding and contouring help you preserve nearly all of your healthy tooth structure. Because tooth structure does not, regenerate modifications are permanent. Therefore, bonding and contouring can reduce the risks of your teeth becoming structurally weak in the future due to extensive alteration.
